Trinity Sunday
175 years
on Joanna Beech
‘In 1846 Edward Moore, (former Rector of St
Mary’s Church) was granted a licence by the
Archbishop to use a temporary building as a
church. This measured sixty feet in length and
twenty feet in width. The walls were of Brick
and Wooden quartering, the Roof of Slate,
and the floor of strong planks. This building
was erected in the field adjacent to the school,
today known as the Paddock.’ This was so
that major re-building of the Church could
go ahead and the congregation of Frittenden
could still join together for worship.
It may have taken 175 years but on Sunday
30th May St Mary’s Church and Trinity Church
Sissinghurst held a joint service in the Paddock
by the school. This was the first service of its
kind, and we were concerned there wouldn’t
be room for everyone to fit in the Church
because of social distancing. So we decided
to move outside. We were blessed with good
weather and were very grateful to the school for
allowing us to use their Paddock and electrical
supply and extremely grateful to Chris Brown
who set up a hugely effective sound system.
30th May was Trinity Sunday, a special day for
our sister Church and we were delighted that
so many of the Sissinghurst congregation came
to join us on their foundation day. In all we
had over 100 people including over
20 children. One of the great joys of being
outside was that we were able to sing hymns,
a tradition that we’re still not allowed to do We do hope that everyone who attended the
in Church, (although on a normal Sunday, open air service enjoyed the occasion and
weather permitting, we go out to sing at least to those residents of the Limes, we hope our
one hymn at the end of the service). service added to rather than disturbed their
Sunday morning!
